One of the lecturers at this year’s Forum is the designer Jan Wilker, who met Hjalti Karlsson – his future partner at karlssonwilker, during an internship for one of the stars in graphic design - Stefan Sagmeister. They were lucky that Sagmeister took a year off so they continued working at his studio for a little longer. Later, in 2000, they established their own design studio inNew York - karlssonwilker. Hjalti and Jan come fromIceland andGermany, respectively, and their work at the moment has been the inspiration for many designers all over the world. Their trade mark is the vivid colors, experimentation, and the desire to offer the audience or customer a new kind of experience. Their list of clients is remarkable – from Nintendo through Warner Bros, Puma and Mini Cooper to Time Magazine.
Another interesting lecturer at the forum is Yuri Suzuki. Yuri is a sound artist, designer and electronic musician whose work explores the aspects of sound through interactive and exquisite design installations. He discovered his interest in music and technology when he started working for the Japanese art studio Maywa Denki (between 1999 and 2005), which became popular with the invention of the musical electronic instrument Otamatone. In 2005, uri Suzuki moved toLondon to study at the Royal College of Art, where he’s been a lecturer in the Department of Product Design since 2013.
Halla Helgadóttir’s presence as a lecturer at the Forum is not accidental. Hatla is a managing director at Iceland Design Centre.Iceland is one of the most rapidly developing and country has also acknowledged the strategic support of design as a discipline has been acknowledged as a successful national policy.
During his lecture, Adam Lederer, programmer and designer of the Los Angeles video games company thatgamecompаny, will focus on the great potential of the interactive entertainment market. Adam’s work deals with the creation of transitory emotions produced by the idea of inhabiting unknown worlds and bodies, as well as the design of scenarios and rules to invite other players join in interactive relationship. It is interesting to note that thatgamecompany’s videogames are the first to become part of MOMA’s permanent collection inNew York and the Smithsonian Institution. Since its launch, the company has been awarded by theBritishAcademy of Film and Television Arts, the Game Developers Choice Awards, and has also a Grammy Award.
Belgian artist Frederik De Wilde is also one of the lecturers this year. De Wilde explores the border between science, technology and art. He believes that art is the poetics of the imagination, while science is the poetics of reality. Throughout his extensive work, he has collaborated with various university departments (robotics, physics, media) from all over the world, while his latest collaboration is with NASA. Presently, De Wilde is a visiting professor in a two-year MA program called Transmedia inBrussels and is also a permanent artist in residence at theUniversity ofHasselt.
Among the other lectures are the American artist and researcher Addie Wagenknecht, whose practice is based inAustria. Her work explores the relationship between the means of expression and the use of technology.
Elodie Mandray and Caroline Aufort of the French graphic design studio Acmé Paris founded a creative studio for graphic design that holds game in high esteem – the game of codes, symbols and graphic tools, borrowed from the very many combinations of visual reference that turn the inherent limitations of every project into an experimental playground.
Carl-Johan Rosén is yet another lecturer at this year’s festival. Rosén is a digital artist and researcher. His work focuses on the issue of what it means to exist in a digital body as a software process and experience the world through electronic plates and binary data flows. His work methods represent a synthesis between art, engineering and science, while the outcome is presented in the form of artistic works, software and text.
