Architecture
Week
Part of the Past Continuous Series at SAW 2011
Moderator: Michiel van Iersel
Failed Architecture is a research blog which shows buildings and urban environments that are malfunctioning, displeasing or have failed to stand the test of time. Because of changing economic, social, political and/or physical circumstances, they are all currently neglected, abandoned, even vandalized or demolished.
Initiated by Non-fiction, an Amsterdam-based office for cultural, technological and spatial innovation, the project strives to learn lessons from past failures and rescue from oblivion some overlooked and underrated urban success stories. Failed Architecture has evolved into a series of live public discussions in Amsterdam, Skopje, Copenhagen, Sofia, and more cities to come.

“In Sofia we will focus on forgotten buildings, monuments and graphic design from the communist era, and strategies to lift them out of obscurity,” says Michiel van Iersel, creator of the web site Failed Architecture, who will be leading the discussion.
