Sofia Dance Week is the first (and only) international contemporary dance festival in Bulgaria. It is organized by 1 magazine and tries hard to fill in a blank in Sofia’s culture life (see also Sofia Design Week and Sofia Architecture Week).
The first edition in September 2008 presented seven of the best European dance companies and choreographers – five inspiring international performances, which were aslo in the selections of the biggest festival scenes in Vienna, Lyon, Istanbul, Berlin and Belgrade, plus two daring Bulgarian acts. It gathered an audience of 10 000 beautiful people, flooded the streets and parks of the city with exhilaration, and was unanimously proclaimed as the most uplifting, memorable, talked about week in the fall of 2008.
Apart from its obvious ambition to sync Bulgaria to whatever is happening in the world of contemporary dance theater, Sofia Dance Week strives to:
_Create a cultural environment where the restless, free and open-minded citizens of the world can (finally) identify themselves and participate.
_Pin Sofia on the European culture map.
_Break the block of post-Communist cultural mechanisms and let the positive new models find their way in.
Welcome to Sofia Dance Week 2009. Thank you for being with us.
Love what you’re doing with this, shame it’s too expensive for many to afford tickets.
One day maybe William Forsythe will bring work here?…
Desperately WAITING for Polish performance.
